The Promise

Featured here are images from a project that focused on the New Jersey shore town of Atlantic City. In "The Promise: Atlantic City, New Jersey", we explore what happened to a shore town that took a gamble on casinos to revitalize itself. Atlantic City was a fading town when the casinos were approved in a referendum on the 1976 election ballot. Forty-seven years after the first casino opened, it has not delivered on the social and economic promise of gambling. It has left Atlantic City with a desolate city, high unemployment, and numerous vacant spaces.
